Liberal Arts Curriculum

The Liberal Arts Curriculum (LAC) constitutes a set of curricular units (subjects) drawn from the diverse branches of knowledge (Humanities, Mathematics, Healthcare Sciences, Modern Languages, the Social Sciences and Economics) lectured in English. The LAC enables students enrolled at UCP to attend subjects lectured on a programme other than that they have registered for. Thus, it provides an opportunity to complement the students’ core education with other fields of knowledge.

The LAC aims to encourage students to think and learn across disciplines and to instill values and skills proper to the holistic goals of humanistic education. By laboring beyond the scope of the specific degree courses, students are encouraged to unleash creativity and to develop the capabilities needed to pursue inspiring work and to strive to improve the condition of humanity. Courses are tailored to respond to the challenges of an increasingly complex world.

To this end, a minimum of 51% of the ECTS credits of a given semester are to belong to the student’s degree programme and up to 49% of ECTS credits deriving from LAC subjects from other UCP degree programes. This is valid for both regular student as well as exchange students (incoming). As the subjects are updated on a yearly basis, for more information please contact your Academic Unit.

For the moment, the LAC is only available within the Academic Units of the Lisbon Campus, however, it´s extension to Porto Regional Center is expected.
